Clough, as part of ​GCR Mongolia joint venture, is participating in one of the most exciting developments in copper and gold mining. Oyu Tolgoi contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits.

Situated in the southern Gobi Desert of Mongolia, approximately 550 kilometres south of the capital, Ulaanbaatar and 80 kilometres north of the Mongolia-China border, Oyu Tolgoi is jointly owned by the Government of Mongolia (34 per cent) and Turquoise Hill Resources (66 per cent, of which Rio Tinto owns 51 per cent). Since 2010, Rio Tinto has also been the manager of the Oyu Tolgoi project.

The GCR team has been awarded the ‘Best Safety Performance: Construction Contractor – Q2 2018’ as part of the Oyu Tolgoi Quarterly forum. This is a significant achievement, and complements our current 1.44 million man hours LTI-free.

GCR Mongolia’s completed works includes:

  • Bulk and detailed earthworks
  • Civil and concrete works for major concrete structures
  • Buried services works including, 35kV, 10.5kV electrical cabling and multiple pipeline scope works consisting of HDPE and carbon steel
  • Decommissioning of 35kV overhead powerlines including the removal of 8 tower structures​

Current scope includes:

  • Construction and commissioning of the blind sink and concrete line of Shaft No 3 and No 4
  • Construction of the Underground Material Handling System for Stage 1

The scope of work involved a detailed review of all preliminary and Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) documentation in a collaborative, open book approach with the client, to assist with development of final scope, schedule and contractual basis (including risk apportionment) to deliver a price for the construction phase and the Package 3 works. Package 3 consists of the rail loop and stockyards for the port end of the 55 Mtpa iron ore mine.

The detailed feasibility study was completed successfully and contributed to the award to the Murray Basin Stage 2 EPCM contract.

Kvaerner Clough Joint Venture

The Kvaerner Clough Joint Venture (KCJV), was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract, for the HIsmelt Kwinana Plant project. The scope of works included procurement of select process equipment from technology package providers, together with other general items of equipment from various manufacturers. Fabrication of process vessels, structural steelwork and pipework was undertaken through construction contracts on a fabrication and erection basis.

The completed HIsmelt Kwinana Plant produces approximately 800,000 tonnes per annum of high quality pig iron using low grade iron ore as feed stock.

Located in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia, approximately 50km east of Newman, Clough’s activities at Jimblebar included mining, processing and trainloading of iron ore scree and bedrock from the Jimblebar satellite orebody. Total material movement had increased from 17 MTPY to 32 MTPY allowing for mining, rehandling, train loading, etc.

Clough’s scope of work included the establishment of all minesite infrastructure as well as the construction and operation of two crushing and screening plants designed to produce four different products in sufficient quantities to achieve trainloading of 120,000 tonnes per week.
